In 19 39, Frank McCorkel represented Hershey. In 1973, Don McCorkel won for Hershey. Don McCorkel was a beast. I saw him wrestle a lot back then cause I lived out in District 3 in the early 70's. He ran roughshod at states, a major and two pins, and he was built like a monster. He just bulled people into submission.[Quote]
Wade McCorkel also took 8th at states for Hershey in 2006

Lower Merion had 3 state finalists in 1941. That team has to be up there for greatest of all time teams. Maybe only D1 team ever to have 3 state finalists.

Of course I had to look this up, LOL...
Three D1 teams have had 3 finalists in the same year. Lower Merion in 1941 is one of those teams. Anyone want to guess on the other 2 teams??
Eight D1 teams have had 2 finalists in the same year (excluding the 3 that had 3 in the same year). Anyone want to guess those?
Maybe I'll eventually make this kind of stat a report to view.

Teams with 3 finalists- 1939 Cheltenham - 1-1st 2-2nd 1941 Lower Merion - 3-2nd 2005 Council Rock South - 2-1st 1-2nd
Teams with 2 finalists- 1977 Council Rock 2-1st 1987 North Penn 2-1st 1999 Council Rock 2-2nd 2004 Pennridge 2-2nd 2006 Upper Perk 2-1st 2006 Boyertown 2-2nd 2013 Norristown 2-2nd
Missing one. I'll try to figure it out.
Council Rock has been carrying District One's water since 1977. They've won 2 state titles (1977, 2005) and have had numerous state finalists over the years

Someone emailed me tonight with a correction, and it involved a unique stat.
There are 2 guys in PIAA history to make it to the finals all 4 years but fail to win the title.
Sam Coursen from Forty Fort, class of 1949 Bob Simpson from Warrior Run, class of 1988
Assuming no other major typos/mistakes with the data, there are 29 wrestlers who were 4x finalists.

Part way through entering the data, I posted some stats on number of wrestlers who competed at states, medalists, and champions. Here are the final numbers now that everything is in...
Total wrestlers to compete at states: 13,175
Total wrestlers with medals: Any medal count: 5,438 (41.275%) 1 medal: 3,506 (26.611%) 2 medals: 1,386 (10.520%) 3 medals: 405 (3.074%) 4 medals: 141 (1.070%)
Total wrestlers with championships: Any champ count: 1,197 (9.085%) 1 championship: 955 (7.249%) 2 championships: 187 (1.419%) 3 championships: 43 (0.326%) 4 championships: 12 (0.091%)
There might be a few more corrections but it shouldn't change the numbers all that much.

Mike looking at these numbers I was taken aback by the % of competitors who won a medal. Then I realized for so many years only 4 guys qualified and the semifinal losers were given 3rd place.

Yeah that's true. I should run the numbers from 1974 to present and see how it ends up. Probably be way different.

Ref: I don't think you're quite accurate on that one. You are right that only 4 guys qualified for many years. However, for as long as I can remember, there were no 3rd place awards. I'm an eye witness.

Just added a new page to the state championships history section. This one lists the all-time and active streaks of qualifiers, medalists, finalists, and champions by schools:
Canon-McMillan and Easton both have the longest active streaks for qualifiers at 51 years. That's the longest ever as well. Reynolds is right behind them at 48 years.
Northampton has the longest active (and all-time) streak for medalists at 38 years. Reynolds is second on the list at 24. Council Rock South and Nazareth are tied for the third longest active medal streak at 18.
Longest ever streak for finalists is 16 by Nazareth that ended in 2019. Bethlehem Catholic has the longest current streak at 12, doubling up Seneca Valley with 6.
Clearfield had champions over 13 straight years to have the longest streak for champs. Bethlehem Catholic is getting close to that mark, as their current streak is 10.
You can get to this page anytime from the main state history page, just click on the second link on the right:

Excellent addition. Council Rock South is approaching "legendary" as a program. Boyertown with an incredible streak of 26 years (and counting) with a State Qualifier

Awesome stats, thanks for compiling this! Maybe some of the historians here can answer this question. Has there ever been a Cinderella story champ in PA? Someone who never had many wins or didn't start until one season when they came out of nowhere and stunned everyone to win a PA Title.
