Topic: SE AAA REGIONAL BRACKETS! Posted: Feb 26 2023 at 12:03pm |
The brackets for the 2023 South East AAA regional tournament are now online!
Please note that there may be changes to the brackets prior to weigh ins on Friday, though hopefully there aren't many.
On the tournament site, click the "Info" link in the gray bar for the schedule and the ticket info.

Why is S-3 wrestling S-4 in the first round at 172? They already wrestled each other twice at sectionals on Saturday.

Nevermind, I see there is a lot of that. Just how the seeding goes I guess.

Might be my failing memory, but the first few weights, 114 and 127 specifically, have all 4 East guys on the same side. I thought all 1st and 2nd placers from the same section were supposed to be on opposite sides of the bracket?

This is the 2nd year of the new seeding, where all wrestlers are seeded (based on points and section place). So it's not a simple format anymore to split up wrestlers in the 4 sections.

I obviously wasn't paying attention, but all four guys from the same section loaded into the same side of the bracket....or first round match ups of 1st and 2nd placers from the same section...isn't passing the eye test. Imagine if Jamie Callendar and Andre Petroski met in the first round of a regional....
Not sure what the best system is, but at least putting 1st and 2nd placers from the same section on opposite sides of the bracket feels more equitable.

A quick glance has all but 10 AAA schools represented at Regionals...
No kids from:
Great Valley Lower Moreland Marple Newtown North Penn Phoenixville Pottstown Springfield Delco Upper Darby Upper Merion William Tennent
It seems like North Penn may have broken a pretty long streak this year. The Upper Darby situation is a shame.

Not a great example since those 2 would've had the 2 most prestige points. 114 is a rough top of the bracket but hard to argue that Dennis should be seeded higher than Smith, McFarland or Heimbach, who all have state-level success to their names. Upsets happen all the time (if you want to call Dennis over Coffin an upset), and sometimes you just gotta wrestle thru.

Why do the 1st and 2nd placers from a section need to be separated? If they are the 8th and 9th best wrestlers in a bracket [or 7th and 10th, etc, etc], should they not be seeded that way? The section tournaments are only there to qualify for the regional, right?
Callendar and Petroski almost always would been seeded 1st and 2nd in their brackets - so they couldn't get a first round matchup.

No perfect way, obviously. Back in 2019 when they used to seed the section champs 1-4 and then fill in from there, Delaney wrestled Lucerne in quarters, even tho they were both state medalists. But a 12-loss kid got 3rd seed because he won his section and a sophomore with 20 wins who went two and out got the 4th seed because he won his section. You can find rough examples no matter how you do it.

I knew the streak thing was on here somewhere....Mike has it tucked in here:
Upper Darby was the school with the longest current streak of Regional Qualifiers at 40. That streak ends. Neshaminy is now the current active streak leader for District 1... . this year will be their 40th straight year having a Regional participant.
The 2nd thru 10th active streaks belong to: Spring-Ford at 37 WC Henderson at 29 Upper Perk at 26 Garnet Valley 23 Quakertown 23 Pennridge 22 Ridley 22 Boyertown 21 CR North 21 CR South 21 Plym-Whitemarsh 21
Boyertown may have a longer steak, but the page with the info is only District 1...BT was in District 3 for a while.

Here's the info for regions in general, based on the data we have:
Looks like Boyertown's streak is 38 according to that page.
EDIT: Check that, it should be 39 as this year's info isn't reflected on those reports yet. Those numbers will be updated once the tournament is over.

Round of 16 and Quarterfinals on Friday (no consis), then everything is wrestled up to the placement matches from Saturday am to Saturday mid afternoon, then they kick you out and you come back for the 1st, 3rd and 5th place matches that start at 6pm (3 session fees if you do the whole thing).

| It costs more to buy the weekend pass than it does to buy each session individually. I assume that is a mistake.
