As part of our plan to get older tournament brackets and results on the site, we've started with some of the more recent state tournaments. Up until now, we've had results back to the 2003 season. Now, we have back to the 1997 season...both AA and AAA. That's the last 19 years worth of brackets and results. You can find the brackets here: http://live.pa-wrestling.com/" rel="nofollow - http://live.pa-wrestling.com/ Just pick the season in the drop-down and then find the year you want. We'll be adding more throughout the spring and summer. A huge thanks to Joe Stabilito for helping with a lot of the data entry on these brackets! Also, a huge thanks to Jack Holt for helping to clean up our wrestler database and assisting with the D1 tournament history which we are still working on. Something else I've been working on...various reports for each tournament's history. This is still in the very early stages, so consider this a limited beta test for the members of the D1 forum. For states, I want to add more reports like district/regional medal count and champ count..like there currently already is for teams. Also going to work on things like last freshman/sophomore/junior to win at each weight, last state champ from each district (maybe at each weight too), etc. If you have ANY suggestions for stats breakdowns and reports, please let me know...either by replying to this post, sending a private message on the forum, or an email at email@pa-wrestling.com.

More interesting numbers from states. I believe that Northampton has the longest streak of consecutive state placers at 32 years (still active, 84-15). Second are Bald Eagle Area (81-99), Canon McMillan (82-00) and Reynolds (still active, 98-15) at 19 years. Top in D1 is CR South at 12 years (still active, 04-15). Norristown (95-05) and Boyertown (01-11) are second at 11 years.

Easton's long streak of consecutive years with medals was stopped last year. Not sure how long it was but I remember talking to a photographer from Easton last year who said it had been a real long time that no one from Easton made it to the second day. I have Easton with their longest streak at 15 years (99-13). The records I have only go back to 74, with Easton missing in 79, 82, 91, 98 and 14.

what a blast from the past. Thanks, Mike. I'd forgotten about one of my favorite matches of all time. Ryan Nunamaker,Nazareth vs. Bob Crawford, Milton was one of the top 5 finals I've seen over the years. Milton had been AA the year before but turned AAA in '91. Crawford was this looong, skinny guy who looked like a good wind could blow him away. And he went to his back way too easily. But when you got him on his back, he had you just where he wanted you. This match was just nuts, with Nunamaker turning Crawford over and Crawford immediately reversing him. Nunamaker was the coach's son, and I think he's a coach up in District 11 now. I didn't take Crawford seriously, but during every scramble, he seemed to end up on top. No matter what Nunamaker did, Crawford seemed to have about 6 inches more body left over. Anyway, the match went in to overtime with Crawford winning, 15-11. I was searching the web to see if I could find a Crawford match, just to see if he matched my memory of him. Weirdly, I found his final AA bout from '90. Strangely, the guy who posted that bout to the web was me. I posted it 5-6 years ago, I guess and promptly forgot about it. Crawford won that one in overtime, too: 13-11. He was kind of a 'last point wins' guy. Bob Crawford was one of the few 4 time PIAA state champs. I think he was the only one who wrestled both AA and AAA, with 1 AA win and 3 AAA wins. if you are interested, here is a link to that '90 match. Crawford only went to his back once, but you can get the idea of how he got out from there. He was the only 4 x PIAA champ that you just had trouble taking seriously. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_FgFYd_wmw" rel="nofollow - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_FgFYd_wmw btw: the final at 152 for 1991 is reported incorrectly. It says that Brian Cippolone of Plum won by Injury Default over Romy O'Daniel of Canon Mac. What really happened is that Cippolone won by disqualification. O'Daniel slammed him a couple of times, the second time knocking Cippolone out. Strangely, I watched O'Daniel at two tournaments (the other being the Manheim Central Christmas Tourney) that year and he was disqualified from both of them. |

coincidentally, looking at Marstellar's 166-0 record, there were some who thought he'd never lose. But just Saturday, he lost to Jason Nolf from Kittanning and Penn State out at Las Vegas. |

He's lost a few times in folkstyle last year also. Was surprised that Nolf handled him in freestyle, since Marstellar is very experienced in the style and this was Nolf's first high level tournament in free. But Nolf took it to him after getting down 3-0 early, Marstellar had no answer to Nolf's low single. One thing you see in Marstellar's losses over the past year is that if guys withstand the early barrage, he generally loses the back half of the matches. Once he gets down in the match, he's not coming back. Maybe going 166-0 isn't all that good of a thing some times. PSU looks like they got the best prospect in PA last year in Nolf.

Marstellar looked extremely out of shape pretty much after the first 30 seconds. Which will hurt you, especially against someone with Nolf's gas tank.

OC 2 years ago Nolf was a 145 who didn't cut weight and Marsteller was a 170 who didn't cut weight. Now Nolf handles beats him handily. 166-0 is impressive as is 4X champ, but 166-0 when your team doesn't really seek out any competition needs a grain of salt. Other than Weircoch in the Ironman finals did Marsteller wrestle any really strong competition? I don't know I didn't follow him that closely. Golf starts at 157 for PSU this year and is an AA.

DoD - I'm not kidding he beat 2, count em 2, elite opponents in high school. Marsteller almost lost Wiercoch at Powerade due to conditioning. I think he was a better wrestler though. Peppleman has a great hs record but I'm not sure he was an elite wrestler. In evaluating the others you mention I can't put any in the "elite" category. BTW Zavatsky was a 3X placer 1X finalist, Barrick was a 3X qualifier, 1X finalist, Thomas was a 3X qualifier, 2X placer, and 1X finalist. Please don't make your case by citing "he should have been a 2X finalist", he was a good wrestler but he wasn't a 2X finalist. Other than Thomas who was an AA two years ago I'm not certain that the people on your list have excelled at the next level. My point is that Marsteller was an "elite" hs wrestler, one of the top 3 ever in PA, but you can't say that his coach went out of his way to find competition outside of PA like many of the other top wrestlers in the state did/do.

I was referring to the number of times Marsteller beat them. All of which I mentioned were great high school wrestlers. His coach took them to PowerAde four times. That is a top 5 H.S. tournament in the nation. He beat whoever was put in front of him. And Casey Kent should have been a state finalist. He was flat out robbed! Today @ Junior World Trials high school senior Logan Massa beat Jason Nolf then Massa loses to Chance. Marsteller goes onto the finals to lose twice by tech & fall to Mark Hall who doesn't graduate high school until next year. PA did have two champions out of eight weight classes Spencer Lee 55kg & Brock Zacherl 60kg. Also along with Chance 74kg Zain Retherford 66kg & Jake Gunning 120kg both lost in the finals. |

DoD - I agree on the call in the Kent match, but he wasn't a state finalist just like Harner wasn't a state champion in an even bigger disgrace.
Did you see Hall tech fall Marsteller twice, the first time in 30 seconds, and he's got another year of high school. Admittedly, he is the exception.

| Man looking back at those district one guys at states in the 80s makes me want to see the results from the southeast regionals over the years but that's probably a bit greedy! Wonder how many of those guys who lost first round and got eliminated (chris kwortnik) would have come back to place. |

Another interesting stat that people have asked about before... who pinned everyone in the state tournament on their way to the state championship? Based on what we have so far, here's the short list of just 7 guys who've done it. | Kirk Stehman won state in 92 after he won it in 91. His name is spelled different "Stedman" in the 1992 bracket. In 1991 he beat Brannon Seaman by one point in the semis. Surprised Seaman took second that year @Regions to Brian Crosby of Glen Mills. |

Luke Pletcher medaled as a runner up this year cbal24. Garrett Scott never had a chance to defend his title his senior year due to the fact he was suspended from school the week of states, thus eliminating his opportunity to compete & capture his 4th state title. Scott also left Edinboro before his eligibility was up for unknown reasons. |

Probably most of them had a story. Glen Koser was running through his senior year like a freight train when he hurt his knee. One of the two most dominating wrestlers in the history of District 1 in my opinion. The other being Kwortnik, of course. He was a pleasure to watch but I'd guess a nightmare to go against. He used legs like a hammer. And Jones got mono during the season and was a shadow of himself by the post-season. Coincidentally, Koser was Jones' coach.

Correct...this list was guys who won a title one year and didn't medal the next. Boiling Springs is a local team out where I live and they are loaded. Tough up and down the lineup with several real stars. The guy is obviously more than a great wrestler. He can flat out coach. Boiling Springs won the AA state dual title, then came in 2nd in the individual standings. |

Awesome! If you (or anyone else for that matter) have any ideas for ways to view the stats, let me know. Probably need to add a search to easily find a particular wrestler. Also going to work on sorting the team list page by any of the different stat columns. Just looked at the 1960 results - Mike Johnson vs. Dick Hamilton in the 112 lb final. According to this, Johnson won 5-1. It's 5-1 in the newspapers that I found, but that doesn't make it correct. I'll see if I can find some articles that also mention the score. Mike: I'd lean toward believing you (especially since my brother, who was there, backs you up) over some imitation PA wrestling website. Now we have to question the results on all the other 83 matches listed on the site. Maybe he really wasn't undefeated? |

HAHA, good one. He was undefeated based on the articles after he won states each year, and his records appear to be consistent. However, there are many other wrestlers where I saw conflicting records...sometimes in the same article. A few times I saw a wrestler with one record listed in the pairings, another listed in an article, and yet another record later in the same article. So for some guys, who knows what their records were. This stuff is great. You look back at the old days and you see patterns develop. You see names that have reappeared years later from the same school. For example, in 1939, Harold Welker won for Shamokin. In 1963, Bill Welker won for Shamokin. btw, Bill Welker became a very influential coach and wrestling instructor, I think in West Virginia. In 1939, Frank McCorkel represented Hershey. In 1973, Don McCorkel won for Hershey. Don McCorkel was a beast. I saw him wrestle a lot back then cause I lived out in District 3 in the early 70's. He ran roughshod at states, a major and two pins, and he was built like a monster. He just bulled people into submission. It's cool that in 1939, District 1 did very well - only 1 champ, but 7 finalists. In 1973, Bill Vollrath placed 3rd for Hatboro Horsham. In '65 Lou Vollrath was 2nd in D1 for Hatboro. And then during the current generation Jimmy Vollrath did very well for CRS and Penn State. It's great to have this information at our fingertips for those of us who like to think about the history of wrestling in PA. Here's a weird factoid. In '73, Ray Frantz of Cranberry won the semi-finals 4-4 in regulation, then 9-0 in OT. Then he won the finals 4-4 in regulation, 13-1 in OT. There's a guy who had something going on in OT. Hey, maybe Mike and his guys want to put up the brackets for District 1 over the years.

Of course I had to look this up, LOL... Three D1 teams have had 3 finalists in the same year. Lower Merion in 1941 is one of those teams. Anyone want to guess on the other 2 teams?? Eight D1 teams have had 2 finalists in the same year (excluding the 3 that had 3 in the same year). Anyone want to guess those? Maybe I'll eventually make this kind of stat a report to view.

Teams with 3 finalists- 1939 Cheltenham - 1-1st 2-2nd 1941 Lower Merion - 3-2nd 2005 Council Rock South - 2-1st 1-2nd Teams with 2 finalists- 1977 Council Rock 2-1st 1987 North Penn 2-1st 1999 Council Rock 2-2nd 2004 Pennridge 2-2nd 2006 Upper Perk 2-1st 2006 Boyertown 2-2nd 2013 Norristown 2-2nd Missing one. I'll try to figure it out. Council Rock has been carrying District One's water since 1977. They've won 2 state titles (1977, 2005) and have had numerous state finalists over the years |

Someone emailed me tonight with a correction, and it involved a unique stat. There are 2 guys in PIAA history to make it to the finals all 4 years but fail to win the title. Part way through entering the data, I posted some stats on number of wrestlers who competed at states, medalists, and champions. Here are the final numbers now that everything is in... Ref: I don't think you're quite accurate on that one. You are right that only 4 guys qualified for many years. However, for as long as I can remember, there were no 3rd place awards. I'm an eye witness. |

Just added a new page to the state championships history section. That's the longest ever as well. Reynolds is right behind them at 48 years. Northampton has the longest active (and all-time) streak for medalists at 38 years. Reynolds is second on the list at 24. Council Rock South and Nazareth are tied for the third longest active medal streak at 18. Longest ever streak for finalists is 16 by Nazareth that ended in 2019. Bethlehem Catholic has the longest current streak at 12, doubling up Seneca Valley with 6. Clearfield had champions over 13 straight years to have the longest streak for champs. Bethlehem Catholic is getting close to that mark, as their current streak is 10. Awesome stats, thanks for compiling this! Maybe some of the historians here can answer this question. Has there ever been a Cinderella story champ in PA? Someone who never had many wins or didn't start until one season when they came out of nowhere and stunned everyone to win a PA Title. |
