Joe Youngblood's Take: At the end of the day, when the rubber meets the road, when push comes to shove, these Gaj and Church are on collision course. But Gaj is on a mission. |
Jet with another bold prediction at 145, as much as I want to see a D1 brother knock off a returning champ, I believe Church will be too much. Church will beat Gaj |
I don't think this is that bold. Both are ranked top 10 nationally and have beaten outstanding competition. Church is certainly not unbeatable and I think he will have trouble finishing shots against Gaj's scrambling. Should be a great final (if Gaj gets by Taddy and Repos).

Only three wrestlers have ever won two AAA titles at the heaviest weight: Allentown Dieruff's George Attiyeh (1976-77), Abington Heights' Evan Craig (2009-10), and most recently Susquehanna Township's Averee Robinson (2011-12). It's interesting to note that heavyweight champs, more than any other weight, frequently come from schools that are not traditional wrestling powers.

A couple of other two time heavyweight champs - pre-AAA: Jim Nance(Indiana) and Bob Funk(Manheim Twp). Nance was also a 2x NCAA champ for Syracuse and is the New England Patriots' first fifty years all-star fullback. The heavyweight division was made for Nance. Before him, the top weight was 185.
Bob Funk wrestled at the Upper Darby Christmas Tournament in '64 and '65. In the 64 finals, he got the crap kicked out of him by Ray Bauer of Haverford, like 8-0 and it wasn't that close. We all thought he was a wimp as he sat in the locker after the tournament and whined. He then reeled off 50 wins in a row and won states twice, then was captain at Penn State. Go figure.

I took Gaj in the Confidence picks. I took Church in pick your team. I do think Gaj is going to beat Church but Church is all but certainly making the finals. Gaj has two really tough opponents ahead of him. I think Gaj really looks awesome and is going to win it.

I wouldn’t sleep on Cunningham. Church has struggled with weight. Semis wrestle quickly after weigh ins. Weight class is wide open. Nothing wrong with picking Gaj.

Where are you getting that Mac Church is having trouble with weight? He's been at 145 all year long and I think it was 144 at Ironman. The third day at states will be like 150 lbs. with all the allowances. To me, he doesn't even look big at 145 lbs.

It is a wide open weight class, it will be interesting to see the semis of Gaj vs Repos, Repos could end up being the champ. Lets see who brings it.

Not arguing. Just stating the weights been tough for him. Notice he missed several None important duals during season. And you never get the 3rd lb at states. So Saturday morning is this afternoon same weight. Finals is a different story.
