Topic: Girls Wrestling Update Posted: Sep 15 2022 at 1:04pm |
In District 1 Souderton, Bensalem, Truman, Boyertown and Tennent now sponsor girls teams. BECA just became the 60th statewide and it is looking like girls will wrestle alongside the boys in the 2023-24 season out at the Giant Center with the boys. I anticipate over 70 girls teams before this season begins.

Quakertown formed this morning as the 62nd school and 6th in District 1. That makes 5 Suburban One Teams!

Congrats to North Penn for becoming the 66th team state wide to form a girls wrestling team. Mike Leister has an accurate list of formed teams here: http://www.pa-wrestling.com/hs-girls/Suburban One League has 6 teams now. Pac-10 has 1. No other leagues in District 1 have a girls wrestling program.

Great news indeed!
This page on the site also listed the schools with official girls teams, listing by date of approval along with some other details as well:

So what is the next step with regard to the PIAA officially sanctioning girls wrestling? Is it still 100 teams before they do anything?
Also, has any District 1 school considered hosting a girls high school tournament this upcoming season? With this many girls teams within the state and nearby NJ (which has already sanctioned girls wrestling), it would seem like a pretty good event that could pack a gym. Don't know if its possible without PIAA approval or how it would effect competition points, but it is something to think about.

I fully anticipate girls wrestling being an official sport in the 2023-24 season.

I am told more details are forthcoming in the next few weeks, but Garnet Valley will be hosting a girls tournament on 1/28/23 alongside of their annual JV tournament. It should be a great local opportunity for the D1/D3/D11 girls to roll!

We have a list of girls tournaments here, though it's still a work in progress as we find out some schedules for the girls teams: http://www.pa-wrestling.com/hs-girls/tournament_list.htm
This is a list of tournaments either just for girls or ones with a girls division, from the SanctionPA.com site:
From that list, there are tournaments hosted by Pottstown, Quakertown, Garnet Valley, and North Penn.
I'd expect more in the next year or so from D1 schools as more teams approve it.

Latest numbers for girls wrestling, we just did an OPC review: 85 formed girls teams statewide (30 in D3 and still 7 in D1) We have 1039 girls listed on HS teams in PA We only had 565 in 2021-22 and 305 in 2020-21 MS has over 500 girls as well, up from 169 in 2020-21 PIAA should most likely establish girls wrestling as a sport this spring with a tournament for 2023-24.

This is growing much faster than expected. When will the other schools in D1 get on board? Largest district in the state and we are only at 7? Where is CRS, CRN, OJR, DW, SF, and FCA? I mention these schools because they do not have a girls team and over the past 10 years have had very strong boys teams. It would be great to see at least 15 d1 programs before next year.

But what do I know

90 teams as of this morning and nearing the final 10 before we hit the PIAA mandated 100 schools to establish girls wrestling as an official sport. District 1 has 6 SOL schools and Boyertown as members of the girls community.

Kudos to Coach Ellis and Sun Valley for starting the 95th girls program in the state this evening. 5 away from the PIAA mandated 100 schools!

We are very optimistic Upper Perk will be approved over next couple of weeks. A vote has been added to the school board agenda and has strong support from the board.

OJR is in the process of trying! We were told we needed to show there is interest before we could get things moving. We have a number of parents and coaches pushing things along. We are doing a clinic for district girls to try wrestling in February. The goal is to have a team next year. We have good numbers in middle school and our youth and we have a lot of great people pushing so we feel ver optimistic about it.

Congrats to Perk Valley for starting a girls wrestling program! We are now one program away from meeting the PIAA benchmark of 100 schools to demonstrate the viability of girls wrestling!

Awesome work by Pottstown to get a girls wrestling team approved this morning. 3rd in the PAC and 13th in District 1... Northern Montgomery and Bucks County coming through strong for the girls! 104 schools state wide and PIAA just read and approved girls wrestling on the 2nd of 3 votes (will be next official PIAA sport at 3rd reading during May meeting).
